WEDNESDAY, FEB. 8: Popular Sean Pitcher’s exposure to the political arena began at a very young age.

His godmother was former UBP MP Grace Pitcher Bell, who defected to the PLP before the 1998 General Election.

Mr Pitcher grew up in St David’s and was the son of the late ship pilot Romeo and stay-at-home mom Ella.

He attended Saltus Grammar School as a young boy and went on to study at Bermuda College.

He worked for the Customs Department for many years.

And between 2003 and 2009 he worked as the marketing manager for Container Ship Management.

In 2007 he ran for the UBP in Pembroke East but ended up losing to Walter Roban.

In November 2009 Mr Pitcher and five other defecting UBP MPs founded the Bermuda Democratic Alliance.

He later went on to become one of the founding members of the One Bermuda Alliance and was the party’s first treasurer.

Most recently he worked as the night manager at Rosewood Tuckers Point.

In an interview with the Bermuda Sun in 2007 he said: ‘Yes, we acknowledge Bermuda has had a shameful past, but we can’t live there.

“We have got to move forward and we have got to be inclusive.”

On Independence he said: “I haven’t personally seen the need for it. I’m not necessarily against it, but before we can talk about independence, we have some other issues to deal with like educating and housing our people first.

“Once we have done that, then we can talk about independence.”

Mr. Pitcher had a busy life outside of politics.

He grew his own flowers and vegetables and had a passion for golf.

He took care of the Anglican Cathedral and loved spending time with his extended family, especially his two nieces.

Religion

He reconnected to the church shortly after 9/11 and his divorce.

“I felt there was something missing,” he told the Sun in 2007. “A friend of mine, an Anglican minister, encouraged me to take an adult confirmation class at the cathedral and I found a home there.”

At the time of his death Mr Pitcher was a Warden at the Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity and a director and patron of Crime Stoppers,

He was a past Chairman of the Bermuda Sailors’ Home.

He also volunteered with the Bermuda Festival of the Performing Arts. He was a member of BMDS, the Bermuda Rose Society, The Bermuda Sailor’s Home, the St. George’s Dinghy & Sports Club, the St. George’s Rotary Club, and the Ocean View Golf Club.
