School basketball teams to visit for Classic tournament

The first annual Bermuda Thanksgiving Classic basketball tournament will be held on November 26 and 27.

It will be the biggest competition in the history of the Bermuda Basketball Association with eight teams battling it out — two local squads and six from overseas.

The home teams are Bermuda high school ‘A’ and ‘B’ squads.

The visitors are Durango High and Chaparral High from Las Vegas, Francis Parker High from San Diego, Georgetown Prep from Maryland, Georgetown District High from Ontario and Metro Prep from Toronto.

Star

The latter is welcoming young Bermudian basketball player Tejour Riley as a student this year.

The rising star received an $18,000 scholarship to fund his studies. The tournament will be at Grotto Bay Beach Resort and each team will play four games per day.

Each team will also visit local schools for a special assembly about the value of being an athlete.

The BBA also announced this week that Chris Crumpler is stepping down as head coach of the Under 18 team.

He will be succeeded by Steven Simons, captain of the Bermuda national team. Simons has won a championship on every level as a player in Bermuda both locally and internally.

Championships

He has also coached Warwick Academy to back-to-back BSSF Championships.

The BBA is seeking volunteers for its various committees, including set-up, media and referees. E-mail [email protected]
