THURSDAY, FEB. 4: Times are tough but that is no reason to limit ambition and global competitiveness.
That was the message at today’s press conference on the first 100 days of Premier Paula Cox’s administration.
Government’s update on its reforms, policies and measures included an announcement that Bermuda might soon host a rocket launch tracking station.
Environment Minister Walter Roban said: “I am excited to boast that The European Space Agency has tentatively been attracted to establish and operate its temporary rocket launch tracking station at Cooper’s Island, which I believe holds a world of promise for our island.”
Few other details were given, but Mr. Roban added: “Related to this, there have been steps taken within our Ministry to insert the presence of Bermuda into the Satellite industry… a formal announcement of these developments will be forthcoming once concluded.”
Today’s rundown of what each Government Ministry is doing to combat the global economic slowdown and provide new opportunities for Bermudians was upbeat.
Premier Paula Cox said: “Hard times bring out the best in us.
“Given the challenges that face us, your Government has to be working at optimal efficiency.
“Our new administration has had to hit the ground running. I have been proud of the way ministers have demonstrated commitment, conviction and courage.”
Ms Cox, who is also Finance Minister, said: “During this first 100 days, Ministries have been re-calibrated so that we can raise the bar and deliver with a new integrated approach to the delivery of services.
“There have been teething pains, but it is necessary that your Government change the way it does business. It cannot be business as usual.”
She adde: “Now is the time to make ourselves more innovative, more competitive and ready for the challenges of this 21st century global environment.
“We remain optimistic about our country’s future.”
