Riders in U.S. for superbike race

"Come home in one piece". That's the bottom line for veteran superbike racer Paul DeCouto when he travels to Alabama this weekend to compete against some of the top amateur riders in the States.

De Couto, who currently leads the Bermuda Superbike Championship series, and Jevaughn 'Squirrel' Simons will take part in seven races in the 'expert' class at the Barber Motorsports Park this weekend.

And, after stepping up from the amateur class, the pair do not expect to be troubling the podium in the Championship Cup Series race. "The expert class is the top level before going pro. Some of the top guys in the States, like Robert Jensen and Eric Wood, race at that level. They are going to be light years ahead of me.

"If I come home safe, don't crash out and have some good, smooth races, then I'll be happy with that." De Couto races in the States a few times each year and his consistently good times earned him the chance to step up to expert class.

"A lot of guys stay in the amateur class because they want to win the trophies, but I do it more for the experience, to have fun and have good racing, so I agreed to go up."

DeCouto, who has an exact replica of his 600cc Yamaha R6 bike, which he keeps in America, said he loved racing in big fields on the huge American tracks.

"It's totally different out there. You get to really open it up on the straightaways. It's much bigger fields. Sometimes you get 70 or 80 in a race.

"It's good to go fast but you know that old slogan 'power is nothing without control', racing on the small track in Bermuda helps us have good control into the corners."

De Couto is pushing for Simons to be able to compete alongside him in the expert class.[[In-content Ad]]
