"Sour grapes - " that's how Vic Richmond describes the complaints from fighter Yvonne Reis' promoter after Teresa Perozzi beat her boxer in a six round fight at Berkeley gym. Bonnie Cannino sent a letter to the Women Boxing Archive Network, which is posted on its website, saying "We were disappointed with Bermuda's unfair judging and the boxing commission's work. This is just another example of the black eye in boxing that keeps boxing back from its growth in this decade. There is no Honor or Respect."

Cannino went on to say that Reis had "clearly won all six rounds." She then went on to list four irregularities.

She said the weigh-in took place 36 hours ahead of the fight instead of the normal 24; a contract was signed for both fighters to be under 165 pounds and Perozzi came in at 166 1/2; That one of the judges couldn't be found causing a delay in the fight for 20 minutes before Richmond stepped in to be a judge; and that several of the rounds were scored 10-10.

Richmond, chairman of Bermuda's boxing commission said the contract was signed for 165 pounds, but that the weight classes stop at 160 pounds for middleweight and 168 pounds for super middleweight.

"Prior to the weigh-in I explained to her that the fight would take place at super middleweight, which is 168 pounds. She said at the time "well, the contract is for 165. I told her that if she wants to stick to that and if either boxer comes in over that, we can have them come back tomorrow and reweigh-in.

"She then told me that she really wasn't bothered about it."

He said Reis weighed-in first and came in at 164 and then Perozzi came in at 166 1/4.

"I specifically said to Bonnie 'Do you want Teresa to weigh-in again tomorrow? And she said 'no.' So where is her argument? It's sour grapes."

He added that the weigh-in does not have take place a strict 24 hours before the fight.

"She agreed to that time, so what's her problem?" Richmond asked. "Why didn't she voice any objection at the time?"

Richmond said that Roy Johnson was supposed to judge the fight and that he had personally seen Johnson arrive at the gym, but when it came time for the match to start he couldn't be found. There was a delay as they tried to find Johnson.

Martial artist Kent Simmons volunteered to judge the fight, but after Richmond questioned him, the commissioner found out that he had never judged a fight before and that made him unsuitable.

Richmond then stepped in to be the third judge.

"I couldn't find Roy. I had Clarence (Hill - referee) looked for him. We had the announcer call his name. We got no response and I was in a real panic."

Richmond said Perozzi and Reis were on the other side of the door waiting to enter the gym. He said he let them know there was a problem and we were missing a judge.

"I took over the judging role and we went ahead with a delay of five to 10 minutes."

He added that according to boxing rules a round can be scored 10-10 if the judges deem it to be even.

Richmond said Cannino complained to him after the fight about the even rounds. "I told her she was absolutely wrong and "I want you to go check the rules and send me an apology. I was so mad."

Reis told the Bermuda Sun after the fight "I was robbed. I don't think I lost this fight. I damaged her. I would like a rematch, but if I can't get a fair decision...I'm very disappointed."[[In-content Ad]]
