Malabar played host to a sevens tournament on Saturday, with the four men’s teams playing out a round-robin — the first of four that will decide an overall winner at the end of the season.

Renegades and Teachers kicked things off, with the former’s Tom Healy scoring two superb tries, both of which he converted, helping his side to a 14-12 win over their arch rivals.

Teachers had two tries  — from Henry Paddison and a wonderful solo effort from Shauntino Simons, with Simons slotting a conversion. Police then secured a stunning 24-0 victory over Mariners.

Dan Cole opened scoring, with Tommy Edwards converting. The impressive Cole scored a second time, with Edwards and Ralshon Douglas adding tries and Edwards converting one.

Teachers and Mariners faced off next, with the former racing 14-0 ahead thanks to Simons and Paddison scoring, with Simons converting both.

Mariners struck back with Scott Brown scoring after captain David Rourke launched an ambitious cross kick, while Ian Nash also scooted over. Lachie Armour converted both to tie it 14-14 at half-time.

Teachers were rampant in the second half and scored fine tries through Simons, David Porter, Nick Chilvers and Donal Moynihan. Simons converted two and Porter one to round out an impressive 40-14 win.

Renegades burst out of the blocks in the next match against Police. Tries from Scott Slater, Healy and John Thompson, with one Healy conversion, put Renegades 17-0 in front.

David Pringle scored a try, which he converted, to pull Police back in but Conor McGlynn extended the lead again. Edwards pulled a late try back but Renegades won 22-12.

Police bounced back in their last game thanks to a hat-trick of tries and a conversion from Cole. Scott Cobon and Padd-ison scored for Teachers, with Chris Naylor converting one, but Police won 19-12.

Renegades went into the final match determined to win and Healy was again instrumental, setting up both Slater and Tony Richardson for tries, both converted by Healy as they led Mariners 14-0.

They went 19-0 up in the second half after another try. Armour scored and converted for Mariners but Renegades won 19-7. n

League games resume on Saturday at Malabar at 1pm.
