Renegades rout Police
Women
Mariners 7, Teachers 5
The first game played was the Mariners ladies against Teachers. Teachers opened brightly and had a number of chances only for lack of concentration at crucial moments resulting in dropped balls and turnovers. Kim Spencer eventually sliced through the Mariners defence to put Teachers in front. Mariners quickly responded with well worked tries from Amanda Swan and Chantal Brown, but Teachers pushed back ahead at the half with scores from Nancy Catellier and Rachel McLoughlin. With fatigue kicking in, the second half was more open and the scores flowed. Mariners upped their game, the highlight being a fantastic Jo Turner try which added to tries from Brown, Fiona Beckerlegge, Laryssa Yuel and Amy Wolfinger. Spencer and Jennifer Crawford notch a try apiece for Teachers, but the ladies in green held on for a 7-5 win.
Renegades 17, Police 1
The second ladies match saw a dominant Renegades rout Police. Renegades played superbly and were completely ruthless as they over-ran the Police. The ladies in black were completely devastating and notched up a huge 17-1 victory over the luckless Police. Melissa Field and Laura Haynes top-scored with four tries each, while the other scores came from Amy Harvey (3), Ruth Boo Leston (2), Karen Peckett (2), Maria Dobinson and Dhaksha Kikkeri. Saphia Tonkin grabbed the lone try for the Police
Men's
Mariners 3, Teachers 12
The first match in the men's was Mariners against Teachers, both sides knowing a win would put them top of the table. From the start Teachers appeared to be the hungrier side, and they dominated possession from the start. Their ball retention was again superb and they constantly pressured Mariners. The men in green defended brilliantly, but the constant red tide eventually wore them down. Jeff Sangster scored in the corner after a well worked move, as Teachers went into the half disappointed not to be more than 5-0 ahead.
Mariners came out in the second half with a strong start and forced Teachers into conceding an early penalty, that Mark Pomeroy confidently stroked between the posts. They had more chances to score but solid defense from Teachers kept them out. Both teams were visibly tired coming down the home stretch as the heat took its toll, and Teachers controlled the remainder of the game. Alvin Harvey then broke through at the end to kill the game, Chris Naylor converting to leave the final score 12-3 to Teachers. Shauntino Simons, Anthony Cupidore, Dave Porter and Mike Barthuizen were excellent for Teachers, while Dave Rourke, Rob Brown and Lachie Armour were best for Mariners.
Police 14, Renegades 38
The day's final match had Police up against Renegades. The 'Gades opened the strongest and physically dominated the breakdowns early on. The early pressure saw Neil MaGuinness slot a penalty after a Police infringement. The pack's dominance resulted in the impressive Mariner Jackson touching down, MacGuinness converting. Police rallied though, and a wonderful break from the superb David Pringle ended with him deservedly scoring under the posts. Tom Edwards scored the conversion to leave it delicately poised at 10-7 to Renegades. The half ended on this score, as Police were a different side from last week and playing very well.
The second half was tight up until the hour mark in the match, with no further scores being added. The brutal heat and humidity were clearly affecting both teams as it had in the previous game. Renegades eventually started to find gaps in the tiring Police side, and tries from Ian Henderson, Scott Slater and Johannes Engelbrecht all benefited with tries. MacGuinness converted all to leave Renegades comfortably ahead as the game drew to a close. Edwards grabbed another try for the Police after an intercept, with the same player converting. Paul Dobinson rounded off the scoring as he fell over the line from a yard out and MacGuinness completed his flawless kicking display with the conversion. Renegades were comfortable winners at the end 38-14.
