Renegades get routed 46 to 7
Old boys
The first match was a Renegades Old Boys Select XV dusting off their kit to take to the field. They were the better side in the opening 20 minutes, and went ahead through Ryan Mather after solid build up play. Rich Slater managed to skew his conversion attempt from in front of the posts wide, as Renegades went in at half time leading 5-0.
The Rest pegged them back shortly into the second half, when David McHugh continued his recent fine form when he gathered his own kick to scamper under the posts. Keith Hodgkins made no mistake from the conversion attempt. With both sides trying to swing the ball around with gay abandon, a handling error saw the ball run loose.
McHugh brilliantly scooped it up in full stride to burst past the static defense to again score under the posts, Hodgkins again converting.
Renegades pushed hard to grab a consolation try, and were rewarded right at the death when Gareth Davies emerged from the mass of bodies with the ball and the try was awarded.
The final score was 14-10 to the Select team after another missed conversion.
Ladies
Up next was the ladies encounter, and that also proved to be a very tight affair. Kate Brown scored the first try of the game after fine work early on. After the early score, Renegades defense came to the fore but the Rest were also defending superbly.
It was 1-0 at half time. The second half again saw both teams struggle to make inroads to the opposition try line, and it was always going to take a piece of magic to see another try.
That piece of magic came in the form of Amy Harvey, who sold a brilliant dummy and step to get through a narrow gap and accelerate away to touch down.
It proved to be the only other score in the match as the trophy was shared after a 1-1 final score.
First XV
The last game of the day was the 1st XV match, as a depleted Renegades were looking to get the club's first win on the day. It was always going to be a tough task against a formidable Select side, who opened the scoring through Durnferd Davis, after he had been put through by his brother Paull. Renegades fought back though, and scored a fine try of their own when Mohamed Dao burst down the wing and scored under the posts after a superb run. Ian Henderson scored the conversion to edge the 'Gades ahead.
The Select side scored one of the try of the season to put them back in front.
Thomas Greenslade set Rich Brown through a tight gap and after a powerful run, Brown offloaded to Dave Porter, who in turn fed Harry Andrews, and Andrews drew the last man before popping to Greenslade to finish off a wonderful try. David Porter converted.
It was to get worse for Renegades, as Pete Dunlop pounced on a loose renegades lineout ball to score, and Andrews scored the fourth try after more great work from the Davis twins. Porter made a fine conversion as they led 24-7 at the break.
If the Renegades were hoping to stop the onslaught, they were quickly reminded of the talent facing them. Paull Davis managed to retrieve his own chip over the top to increase the lead, and then Steve Husbands broke from his own '22 and finished off in style after a mazy run that had side-steps and dummies.
Chris Way converted one try. Way then turned provider for Durnferd Davis's second try, as he showed great vision and skill to chip the ball across the field into Davis's hands to go over the whitewash again. A break from David Pringle and fantastic handling and offloading saw that the bragging rights between the Davis boys would be shared, as Paull finished off a fantastic move to complete a 46-7 rout.
