Proceeds from this weekend’s Fairmont to Fairmont Race will be donated to The Friends of Hope Academy.

The charity, affiliated with Dame Marjory Bean Academy, will use the funds to help send students with special needs to summer camps and participate in other activities.

The annual race sees runners complete a 7.2-mile trek between the Fairmont Hamilton Princess and Fairmont Southampton.

A 3k race for juniors is also held.

The event marks the beginning of the running calendar and last year’s race attracted about 300 participants.

The total charitable donation per entrant will be $10, with $5 coming from runners and the remainder matched with a donation from Fairmont Hotels Bermuda.

This is the 34th annual race between the two landmark hotels.

David Packer, director of facility operations for the Fairmont Southampton, said: “This race has become a traditional way for runners in Bermuda to kick off the New Year and get in shape for upcoming races. It is also my first running race in Bermuda, so I am looking forward to a well-organized and fun event.”

Fairmont to Fairmont is organised by the Mid-Atlantic Athletic Club (MAAC) and sanctioned by the Bermuda Track and Field Association.

April Vesey of MAAC, who co-directs the Fairmont to Fairmont race along with Chris Page, said: “This race always has a fun atmosphere because it is the start of the year and everyone is looking forward to getting out after the holidays.”

The race begins at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess at 9am and ends at the Fairmont Southampton’s Ocean Club, where there will be light refreshments and the awards ceremony. Free ferry transport for runners to Hamilton departs from the Waterlot Inn at 11:30am.

Prizes will be awarded to the top runners, plus there will be a prize draw for all entrants.
