Pumas to face Lions in Classic final
SATURDAY, NOV 12: A last minute Puma try left Canadian dreams of reaching the Classic final in tatters last night.
Lucio Lopez jinked his way across the whitewash with the last play of a pulsating game to send the Argentineans marching into a final showdown with the Classic Lions tonight.
Just minutes earlier it was the Canadians who looked set to book themselves a place in the final with a typically swashbuckling performance.
The Pumas trailed 10-5 with just over 15 minutes to play but threw themselves a lifeline with a well-worked Santiago van der Ghote try.
The game looked destined for extra time with the scores tied at 10-10.
But then up popped the little winger Lopez. The Canadians gave the speedster too much space down the right hand side and with the final seconds ticking down he stepped inside the last Canadian defender to seize a dramatic win.
It was to be the final act of a fiercely competative match which could have gone either way.
The Canadians will look back on crucial missed tackles that ultimately cost them the game.
The Pumas do not have much time to recover however as they face a fresh Classic Lions team at 8pm.
In the other plate semi-final the Australians squeezed past the Spingboks 26-21 with an exhibition of running rugby.
Many people would have expected these two teams to have been battling it out in the main competition but this did not stop the two sides providing the crowd with a typically hard-fought and entertaining spectacle.
The Wallabies take on the U.S. Eagles for the plate at 6:30pm tonight.
