Lawyer Paula Ann Cox was first elected as an MP in October 1996.

The 46-year-old politician serves Constituency 14 – Devonshire North West and has held a number of portfolios in Government.

Under the premiership of Jennifer Smith, she was appointed the PLP’s first Minister of Labour, Home Affairs and Public Safety. In 2001 she won a Best of Bermuda Gold award for being the island’s ‘most effective politician’, largely for what was seen as her decisive handling of the thorny issue of long-term residency.

She and her father, the late C. Eugene Cox, served together in the first PLP administration.

In November, 2001 she was appointed Minister of Education and Development, then in July 2003 she went on to become Attorney General and Minister of Education.

During this dual portfolio she was again awarded the Best of Bermuda Gold award for most effective politician and accepted an honorary doctorate in education at Wheelock College.

After the death of her father, who served as the Deputy Premier and Minister of Finance, Ms Cox succeeded him as the Minister of Finance in January 2004.

She has served as Deputy Premier for the last four years.

Ms Cox attended Berkeley before earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from McGill University in Montreal and a postgraduate diploma in international law from the University of Manchester in England.

She is Corporate Counsel at ACE Limited, having previously worked as vice president and senior legal counsel of Global Funds Services at The Bank of Bermuda Limited.

Ms Cox is one of three siblings and the only daughter of Mr. Cox and the late educator F. Alinda Cox.

Her two younger brothers are Jeremy Cox, the supervisor of insurance at the Bermuda Monetary Authority, and Robert Cox, an electrical engineer currently living in California.

Ms Cox has been married to Germain Nkeuleu, a businessman from Cameroon, since 1999. She has one school-age son, Stefan.
