Police warn of internet fraud

By Bermuda Police Service- | Comments: 0 | Leave a comment

WEDNESDAY, APR. 20: Once again the Bermuda Police Service would like to remind members of the public about online scams and fraudulent e-mails. We are still receiving numerous reports of these scams and reiterate that the public should remain vigilant regarding any unsolicited correspondence.

The internet is a worldwide network and as a result scammers can find out information about persons online. They then use this information to perpetrate their schemes.

One example involves e-mails concerning the inheritance of a large sum of money due to the death of an unknown person with the same last name as the recipient. The e-mail asks for the recipient’s personal details including contact information and banking particulars so that the ‘inheritance’ can be transferred into the beneficiary’s bank account.

There are many variations of this – but the consistent theme is that fraudsters are making contact with individuals in order to convince them to part with their money. Remember - if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.
