Police warn of fake cheques

THURSDAY, JUNE 2: Counterfeit cashier’s and traveller’s cheques are increasing in number, according to police.

A press statement said the Bermuda Police Service Financial Crime Unit has identified the typical fake cashier’s cheque as being mailed from the UK with a face value of $2,750. The most common fake traveller’s cheque appears to be from American Express and claims to be worth $500 (US).

It became apparent these fraudulent cheques were in circulation after local residents responded to a recent internet advertisement promoting an alleged “work from home” opportunity.

Police have made local banks aware of the counterfeit cheques.

The Financial Crime Unit said anyone who receives these cheques should disregard them. They have no value.

If in doubt contact the Financial Crime Unit on 295-0011.
