FRIDAY, JUNE 15: Police today warned drivers to take care on the roads because of heavy rain.

A spokesman said police were not aware of any major incidents caused by the weather — but urged drivers and motorcyclists to take extra care.

The spokesman said: “People should exercise caution and be aware that there is some flooding on the roads.”

A spokeswoman for the Bermuda Weather Service said nearly 2.5 inches of rain had fallen in the eight hours from 4am today – the highest rainfall in a single day since October 4 last year.

Across the island, several roads were flooded, including Bakery Lane in Pembroke, where residents took to a rowing boat to get around. Others were temporarily stranded in their cars in deep water.

The Weather Service forecast predicts more rain and windy conditions over the holiday weekend and into Tuesday – and issued a thunderstorm warning.

Saturday is expected to be cloudy with showers and the chance of thunder, while showers with sunny breaks are predicted for Sunday.

Monday is likely to be a mix of sun and cloud with the likelihood of showers increasing after nightfall.

The Weather Service spokeswoman said that an area of low pressure to the west was to blame for the bad weather.

She added: “This sets up a rather unsettled Friday and weekend ahead, with plenty of cloud and patchy rain or showers.

“Some of the showers are likely to be heavy with the risk of thunder and gusty winds.”
