David Thomas cemented his reputation as the island’s top junior player, taking the first major title of the season.

The 17-year-old beat Charles Skater in the final of the Cromwell Manders’ tournament at the national tennis stadium yesterday.

The pair later teamed up to win the doubles competition.

The five-day tournament saw junior players, in all age categories, competing.

Tournament director Julia Lunn said there had been some real talent on display over the past few days.

“I was very impressed with the standard, right down to the nine and ten year olds.”

She said she was also impressed with the attitude of the older kids and their willingness to help out with the younger players.
