'Pick your Poison' time for the PLP
Since entering politics the doctor's ambitions have been as obvious as Pamela Anderson's implants - and almost as big. And now the PLP delegates are supposed to choose which of these overstuffed boobs they want to support.
As we all know, Ewart's first attempt to seize power in 2003 was foiled when the Party Faithful reacted badly to being 'misled' by him. Not deceived mind you - merely misled.
The distinction is lost on me, but apparently the Brown camp feels it's an important one. This time he's mounting an open challenge, which at least has the advantage of honesty.
But who would make a better Premier? That's a tough one. If it were up to me, I'm not sure who I'd pick.
Apart from getting his pay increased, Mr. Scott has proven to be ineffective at everything but making speeches to announce new initiatives that don't actually initiate anything.
And you really have to question the leadership of anyone who puts David Burch in charge of Tourism.
That's right, our hospitality industry is now in the hands of one of the most inhospitable Bermudians in recent memory.
This is a man who admits to not caring what white people think and feels that anyone who disagrees with him should just get over it.
He's the last person who should be in charge of making our visitors welcome.
And while Dr. Brown has got things done in Tourism and Transport, can we really afford to have him as Premier?
Worse to come?
If he's so willing to deceive his own party just to get power what will he keep from the rest of us once he's got it?
I know he's a politician, so I really don't expect honesty, but this is also the man who feels he can avoid answering difficult questions by merely deeming them to be "Plantation-like".
It looks to me like it's 'Pick your Poison' time for the PLP. Whoever they pick will have to lead them into the next election and is then unassailable for four years. Of course, that's what Jennifer Smith thought, so who knows?
It probably doesn't really matter anyway since the problems with this Government run deeper than the leadership.
Take Wayne Perinchief's plan for drug-free work places islandwide. It's a very good idea, but shouldn't they lead by example and start with Parliament? Last I heard the PLP MPs were still refusing to accept random drug testing.
Of course, this is symptomatic of Government's 'do as I say not as I do' attitude. Just look at Sustainable Development. Lots of meetings and proclamations about conservation, but first chance they get they want to concrete over a third of the Botanical Gardens.
They claim this option will save hundreds of thousands of dollars and that may be so.
But if there's one thing we have lots of in Bermuda it's money. In fact the Government has so much of it they can't keep track of where it all goes. Did the Auditor General ever find the paper trail for that unaudited $800 million of expenditure?
And they can always find more money if there's a project they really like - remember the $1 million budgeted for PLP TV?
And then there's the $12 million per year for their own travel expenses. If they'd just reduce that to the $2 million the UBP spent annually they'd save up an extra hundred grand before the new hospital gets completed. And don't forget they managed to scrape together an extra $60 million or so that they needed to complete Berkeley.
Government can always get more money, but they can't get more open
space.[[In-content Ad]]
