Conductor Kent Hayward said he believed it was the first time in the Band’s history where all wind instruments were played.
The concert takes place on September 25 at 8pm at Warwick Academy’s Phoebe Purvis Memorial Hall. There will be renditions of Gustav Holst’s First and Second Suite for Band, some movement’s from Handel’s Water Music, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s, Flight of the Bumblebee, Leonard Bernstein’s Candide Overture and two lighter numbers — 80s Flashback with some key themes from the 80s and some Beatles songs.
Mr. Hayward said: “We will have flutes, clarinets, saxophones, French horns, trumpets, trombones, tuba, baritone and maybe oboe and percussion. The rationale behind that is that we have had quite a broad membership and with some of the orchestral things we do, you can’t always fit everyone in.”
There will be a mix of 31 band members ranging from amateur to professional. Tickets are $35 and $15 and are available from Harbour Master in Washington Mall, Shine Hayward’s shop on St. John’s Road, Hamilton and BDAtix.com. Money raised from the event will go towards the Bermuda Philharmonic Society.
The concert includes a number of family members playing together. Trombonist Graham Maule will play alongside his sister-in-law Lisa Maule (clarinet & percussion) and his brother-in-law Conrad Roach (trumpet and soloist) as well as his niece Brianna Roach (trombone). Mr. Hayward will be playing alongside his parents Winslow Hayward (Tuba) & Gloriajean Hayward (Baritone).
