THURSDAY, AUG. 5: Deputy Premier Paula Cox today confirmed that she will run for the leadership of the PLP and the country.

In a lavish launch ceremony at the Arboretum, Minister Cox officially declared her intent to be the next Premier.

Flanked by virtually every Cabinet minister and in front of a large crowd of party stalwarts, Ms Cox promised to recapture the optimism and hope that surrounded the PLP when it first came to power in 1998.

Campaigning under the slogan 'moving forward together', Ms Cox said she hoped to lead as “first among equals”.

"It will not be business or politics as usual," she promised. She said Bermuda was “aching for another wave of change” and that she hoped to “recapture the dizzying heights of November, 1998”.

Ms Cox said she was taking nothing for granted, despite the huge show of support this morning. She was introduced by Senator
Walton Brown, who said she combined “quiet strength, keen intellectual sensibility and principled determination”.

A who's who of PLP top brass, including former Premiers Dame Jennifer Smith and Alex Scott, current education minister El James, union boss Chris Furbert and Attorney General Kim Wilson, sat behind Ms Cox in support of her campaign.

The MPs and party delegates will utlimately select the leader at the annual conference in October. Terry Lister is also running for the leadership and Dale Butler has indicated that he intends to run as well.
