P & M and Blue Thunder roll to impressive wins
By Don Burgess
The Championship series began on Monday night with two blowouts in women’s and men’s play.
EZ Grlz 8, P & M Electicutes 25
This game was never in any doubt as P & M scored at least four runs in every inning. Those sort of scoring opportunities will happen when the two through seven hitters go a combined 27-30.
Diane Blais (5-5, 4 doubles) set the table in the first inning for what would be the common pattern for P & M. She smacked a double, Charlie Corday (5-5) doubled her home who was followed by a Carla Zuill (5-5, 6 RBI) double, Kourtney Fassler (5-5, 6 RBI) singling her home before Rose Sanders (4-5) and Alicia Miller (4-5) finishing off the damage.
The game was remarkable for two other hitting exploits by the Electicutes, both in the sixth inning. Corday hit a two-run homer out of the park. She becomes one of a handful of women to do so.
The other saw Fassler hit an inside-the-park homer and complete a cycle (single, double, triple and homer).
P & M scored six in the fifth inning to help put Grlz out of their misery in a mercy win.
Akanke Parsons was 3-4 for Grlz while teammates Desiree Butterfield and Catherine Vu were both 2-4. Vu and Julia Sousa both had two RBI.
Blue Thunder 37, Red Dragons 20
This game was on the verge of being stopped because of the mercy rule a few times, but went the full distance with Thunder scoring 11 times in the ninth to put an exclamation mark on the victory.
Thunder pounded out 48 hits with Darren ‘Captain Caveman’ Green leading the way with three homers and nine RBI. Leadoff batter and pitcher Jon Gazzard helped his own cause by going 7-8 with two triples.
Manager Tracey Bean (6-8), Bradley Barton (6-7) and Mike Musson (6-7) all had six hits. Gazzard, McLaren Lowe (5-8, HR), Matthew Fullerton (5-8) and Don Burgess (4-4) all had four RBI in the winning cause.
Thunder were up 16 to 0 in the fourth when Terence Corday (5-6) broke up the shutout with a homer. Teammates Nyon Steede and Shawn Wood were both 4-6. Jon Towers (3-5) hit a homer and drove in four runs. n
