Outerbridge’s driving ambition is to open for BDA

Batsman Stephen Outerbridge has perhaps the best chance of the four academy students of breaking into Bermuda’s World Cup squad.

The 22-year-old knows there are two slots up for grabs at the top of the order following a string of low scores from the batsmen lined up to fill that problem position.

And he is doing all he can to make sure his name is right up there in the reckoning when Gus Logie next assembles his squad.

“That’s the idea. It’s a wonderful chance to take but I look at it one game at a time. Anything could happen between now and the World Cup.

“Bermuda’s got a tour coming up and hopefully I can get on that and go on from there.”

Outerbridge achieved a degree of notoriety following his Cup Match spat with St George’s fast bowler George O’Brien.

But that seems to be behind him now and the Bailey’s Bay all-rounder has one foot in the national squad after being called up by Gus Logie to join the team for two one-day matches in Namibia.

He failed to cement his place with big runs on that occassion, but he knows that there are bound to be other opportunites.

A host of players including: Curtis Jackson, Delyone Borden, O.J. Pitcher, have also failed to make the role their own.

Outerbrifge believes the training camp has helped him improve his mental toughness and develop as an opener giving him an edge on his competitors.

“It’s been a very different experience for me. The fitness aspect has been the biggest difference.

“It just shows you the level you have to reach to compete in international cricket.

“Normally in Bermuda the off-season is your time off, you don’t do much during the winter and start training again in the summer.

“There is no off-season now. Bermuda’s got matches from January and we have to be fit.”

Outerbridge, a driver for Dunkley’s Dairy, said he had jumped at the chance to take three-months in South Africa to improve his chances. And he said he was grateful to his employer for helping to make it happen.

“They are supporters of sport in general and they know it's a goal of mine to play for Bermuda,” he added.[[In-content Ad]]
