Only St. George's stands in the way of perfection
Smith’s Wildcats seek undefeated season while International seek dynasty
Smith's Wildcats are trying to stamp their authority as one of the greatest teams ever in Bermuda history by making it a perfect season. They haven't lost a game yet this year and don't plan on letting that happen against St. George's International.
While Smith's are desperately seeking perfection, St. George's is looking for another trophy to mark their dynasty.
Over the past three years, St. George's is the only team to be in every final. They won the title two years ago and suffered a heart-breaking loss in last year's championship.
This time around they are seeking to atone for that blemish in their run.
St. George's captain Dean Jones says his side has been working hard all year to get back the championship.
"We had the talent to make it to the finals," Jones said. "This is what we work for all season and we expect to be there at the start."
He added making three finals in a row shows St. George's resilency.
"We had a lot of injury woes last season and we still made it to the finals and this season we expected the same thing. We've talked about making the finals all season. We want to get the title back and bring it back to St. George's. Everyone still knows that St. George's is the team to beat in the league."
He added they do not expect Smith's to lie down and hand them the title.
"This is going to be tough. Smith's is a good team. This is going to be a battle and hopefully, at the end of the night, we have more points on the board."
Jones said the keys to the game for International is "to play to our strengths, which is our size and pound the ball inside. If we are able to do that, we should be able to pull off a victory."
Jones said it has been a true team effort with Damon Saunders at the point; Johnathan Lugo keeping defences honest with his three point shooting; Charjuan Knight in the post - "Without him, we wouldn't be where we are today."
The St. George's captain said it would be critical in limiting the Wildcats Jason and Steven Simons three-point attempts.
"If they don't get off to a good start and, if we are able to do that we stand a good chance of winning."
Smith's Wildcats captain Steven Simons said his side is confident they can win it all.
Focused
"We went through the regular season undefeated. We had a tough game against St. George's in the regular season but came out on top. We're going to take this game like any other game and stay focused."
He knows part of his team's success is limiting the inside game of St. George's.
"They have the two best big men on the island in Charjuan Knights and Dean Jones. We'll have to continue to play solid defence and rebound the ball well to stay in the game. We have Ryan Rabain, who is the MVP of the league, as well as Derek Hurdle to match up against them.
"My attention will be focused on Damon Saunders, who is one of the best guards in the league."
Simons' brother Jay has been hot with his outside shot, especially during the playoffs.
"My role this year has been to facilitate the offence and get everybody involved. I pick spots when it comes to scoring, but definitely key for us is for Jay having a good shooting night. When he's hitting his shot, he's far and away the best three-point shooter on the island. That definitely helps.
"We had a game earlier in the playoffs where he couldn't miss and he carried us right through so I'm hoping he has one of those on Saturday."
Steven Simons said from day one, the Wildcats set a goal of going undefeated for 2010.
"That's something we talked about at the beginning of the season. Nobody's every done it and it would be pretty special - especially for our first championship."[[In-content Ad]]
