O'Donoghue helps Renegades rout Mariners

Defending rugby champions Renegades recovered from an opening day defeat to rout Mariners 41-3 at the weekend.

Darragh O'Donoghue was the principal architect of the Mariners' destruction scoring two tries, four conversions and a penalty.

Mark Lea, Peter Dunkerley and James Holburn were also on the scoresheet in a crushing win for Renegades.

The clash between Police and Teachers was a very different game, with no tries for either side as a physical, defence orientated contest ended 3-3

Police started well and dominated the initial exchanges. Most of their early possession came from the impressive line-out skills of Tim Morris. The Teachers' defence proved impermeable to the bullocking charges of Mark Evans and Kenny O'Shea, and the Red's backline kept Police's dangerous midfield under enough pressure to extinguish the few opportunities they had to move the ball wide.

Rob Steinhoff limped off after 20 minutes and Teachers began to dominate the scrums, while Morris continued to provide the blues with plenty of ball from the air. Neither side were able to break through however, but National Team fly-half, Chris Naylor slotted the season's first attempt at goal (with the posts now in place at Malabar) to give Teachers a 3-0 lead going into half-time.

The defensive battle continued throughout the second half, with the majority of actual play coming from both sides' half-backs; Kiwi duo, Glenn Corke and Andrew Flynt for Police, and Irishman David Porter combining with Naylor to release their respective centres on occasion.

The defences held firm however, with only a rare penalty giving Mike Kane the opportunity to kick the equalizer from wide-out with 15 minutes to go.[[In-content Ad]]
