Nisbett wins Bermuda's Olympic spot
Beats Terceira to compete in Hong Kong
Left to be confirmed are two track athletes, which is likely to be long jumpers Arantxa King and Tyrone Smith.
Showjumpers Nisbett and Jillian Terceira had both made the qualifying standard for the Olympics by their performance in last year's Pan Am Games. The Bermuda Equestrian Federation met on Tuesday night and selected Nisbett.
The pair were scheduled to compete in three jump-offs to decide who would represent Bermuda in Hong Kong (the venue for equestrian events). Nisbett was ahead after one competition with four faults aboard Antille to eight for Terceira and Navantus, but Navantus had an injury prior to the second jump-off and was no longer able to compete.
A press release from the BEF said: "Jillian had a second horse capable of reaching the required standard by the name of Chaka 111 and on the final day of qualifying at a specially arranged event the combination reached the required standard. However, as Antille had taken part in the previously designated events and had attained some of the criteria and also had proven her fitness at the special event, she was declared to be ahead of Chaka and Navantus in the standings.
"This means that should anything happen to Antille prior to the final entry deadline in July which might prevent her from competing then Jillian and Chaka will be the reserve combination. Both Patrick and Jillian competed in the Pan American Games last year in Brazil and the Federation are pleased that we have two riders of this calibre."
This is the first time that Bermuda will be represented in show jumping in the Olympics.
Track and field athletes have until July 23 to qualify, at which point the two designated slots for Bermuda will kick in.
