New Year’s Eve partying just went up a notch

Kid Koala to play at BAA

This New Year’s Eve, the same people who brought you the Fort Hamilton Halloween party are importing internationally acclaimed Canadian Marsupial Master Turntablist Kid Koala as part of their 2006 bash at the Bermuda Athletic Association.

Kid Koala, AKA Eric San, has enjoyed immense success as a multimedia artist, stemming from his success as a turntable musician, turning what was once considered a dead consumer product into an instrument in its own right.

Kid Koala’s talent has landed him some impressive gigs, having toured with the Beastie Boys on their 1998 Hello Nasty tour, and playing with the likes of Money Mark and Radiohead. Ongoing projects such as Lovage and Bullfrog show his innovative approach to Dj-ing, which has evolved into what he calls ‘a complete cabaret performance’ including turntables, original artwork and slideshows. The 12am January 1 set promises to draw from both his success as a turntablist and as an illustrator, with previous albums-with-bonus-books and books-with-bonus-albums under his belt (or in his pouch). Kid Koala will play for an hour-and-a-half set, right after a midnight turnover designed by Bermudian artist Will Collieson.

Party organisers Jon Legere and Matthew Strong were able to secure Kid Koala through connections made while living in New York and Montreal.

Other entertainers at the event include the Chewstick band opening the night to “The Butcher”, who had 700 people shaking at the Halloween party to the debut of “Colt 45: The Old Gun” playing vintage reggae tunes from his collection of over 40,000 albums.

An urban art/graffiti component will be incorporated into the event, and break dancers are being actively courted. The organisers have agreed that if anyone can prove their worthiness as a break dancer, they will award them free entry to the event. Got moves? Email them at: [email protected]

A portion of the proceeds will go to the BMDS Charitable Trust. Also worthy of note, the bar setup has been designed so no-one will have to wait for drinks, with a champagne bar to boot. “As much as we raised the level for musical acts and entertainment, we’l do the same for service”, vowed Jon, who went on to outline their Designated Driver programme, whereby identified D.D.s will drink free non-alcoholic drinks all night.

Tickets to the event are $50 in advance at www.boxoffice.bm, Frameworks Gallery, The Edge, and Jackson School of Dance. They do plan to sell tickets at the door for $60, but last year’s party sold out well before the night itself. Full tenting means that, rain or shine, the party will[[In-content Ad]]
