Naude in fine form for May 24th
Naude broke the two-hour barrier for the first time in his athletic career winning the race at a canter from Norbert Myer, who was more than 10 minutes back.
Third was Paul Kerton while Kim McMullen won the women's event from sister Deanna in second and Joanna Shillington in third.
Naude, who completed the 1.5km swim, 40km cycle and 10km run, in a time of 1.59.02, said he had not been expecting to break the two-hour barrier - a long-time personal goal.
“I had a decent swim, but that's not my strongest and I was a couple of minutes behind the leader, John Legge.
“The conditions were pretty good for the bike, it wasn't too windy and I had a decent ride.
“I wasn’t pushing it too hard on the run with May 24 coming up but about halfway through I realized I had a chance to break two hours and really started pushing it to the end.
“I was pleased — I was not really expecting such a good time.”
He added that he was still not counting himself among the favourites for May 24.
“I’ve been training for 10km runs not 20km, although I have done some longer runs. I’d be pleased to finish in the top ten.”[[In-content Ad]]
