Police boxing coach Mannix Simmons refused to join the war of words ahead of Saturday night's 'Fists of Fury' saying: "I'll let my boxers do the talking for me."

Simmons said he had respect for both his rivals - Forty Rego and Chucky Renaud - and was happy to work with both men.

But he said the pre-bout trash talking between the two would mean nothing come Saturday night.

"I ain't got to worry about them boys. It's not the coaches that fight, it's the fighters.

"I'll let my boxers speak for me in the ring.

"I believe we have a team that can go out there and win."

Simmons said Nikki Bascome, the young contender, who will take on Controversy Gym's Jashun Thomas in the main event, was a real prospect for the future.

"This little guy here should be an Olympian the next time it comes around. He's devastating. He's fast, he's got power, he has everything."

Stefan Dill, a 17-year-old heavyweight in his first bout, will have his work cut out in his two bouts against Jermal Woolridge and Lubin Sousa.

But Simmons is confident he can step up.

"He's quicker than he looks and he should be able to outpoint those guys pretty easy."

Police Gym's final fighter Scott Brown has swapped his wedding ring for the boxing ring, getting straight into the arena after returning from his honeymoon.

"We told him he didn't need to fight but he really wants to do it. That tells you how hungry he is."

Simmons said the three boxing gyms had all had their periods of dominance over the years, diplomatically commenting that they were all 'about equal'.

But he added: "Police is the longest standing boxing gym on the island. We've been going for 40 years, so we have a rich heritage. We're also the only gym that actually puts on an event and takes boxers away to fight."

Promote Reuben Bean, of Jiketsu Martial Productions, said the talking would stop and the fighting would start on Saturday evening.

"We're expecting a sell-out. The coaches and the fighters are determined to prove their gym is the best in Bermuda. Everything is going to be left out there on the mat on Saturday night.

"We're asking some of the boxers to fight twice, so we'll really see what they've got."

He added that Jiketsu Martial Productions would be taking the entertainment to a different level with a half-hour fashion show from sexy Secrets models.[[In-content Ad]]
