Men’s Select basketball team whitewashes Canadian squads
The first contest was against a high school select looking to earn basketball scholarships in the U.S.
Coach Roderick Spencer said this game was played as a controlled scrimmage which allowed him to get a better look at some of the developmental players on the BBA team.
Game two was played against a collection of George Brown College (GBC) current players and Alumni.
The BBA Select team moved out to a 40 to 25 lead at half time.
GBC collected themselves and countered a lackadaisical performance and poor shot selection by the BBA Select with a bombardment of three point shots to take the lead by the middle of the second half.
Late in the game, the BBA select finally got out of the doldrums.
A team defensive surge and a clutch three pointer by Chris Crumpler, enabled them to tie the game.
With 5 seconds left, the BBA select had a chance to win the game, but were unable to get a good shot which forced overtime.
In the overtime, the BBA Select team maintained its composure and defensive effort to pull out a 83 - 74 win.
Spencer said the player of the game was Chris Crumpler who had 20 points, five rebounds and seven assists.
He gave an honourable mention to captain Dale Jackson, who had 12 points, five rebounds and played exceptionally well on defence.
Also excelling was Graham Robinson with 17 points, seven rebounds and three assists.
The final game was against a club team in the Toronto Basketball Association’s adult league.
Spencer said: “They were a little older than the other teams and we had a little edge athletically we beat them 75 to 50 and used that game to give some of the guys that hadn’t played much a chance to get more court time under their belts.
Even though we were more athletic than the other team they showed a lot of heart and showed some of our guys how to play the game with their head and not just their speed or jumping ability
The team used these games as part of their build-up towards the 2007 Island Games in Rhodes.
Bermuda is set on defending the gold medal it won at the 2006 Island Games.[[In-content Ad]]
