Mariners sail clear of Renegades in 31-10 win
WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 23: Mariners were fortunate with their first try. Renegades won a Mariners line out in their own 22, but in passing it along the backs on their own goal line, it was knocked on, with Mariners’ Gareth Williams the first to react to the loose ball to touch down under the posts with Peplow converting.
The rest of the first half was pretty even going.
In the second half, Mariners, after a period of sustained rucking and mauling, scored a crash over try from centre Lachie Armour. Peplow converted again.
Mariners third try was a well-placed grubber kick by Tim Peplow along the side line.
Gareth Williams out paced the turning Renegades defence, tapped the ball on soccer style and dived on it for a well-created try.
In the midst of a game with a few niggles in the exchanges, two yellow cards and one red card, Renegades conceded a penalty in their own 22 for collapsing a maul.
Mariners declined the normal kick for the corner routine and ran the penalty instead.
Kris Laplaca clattered into the Renegades defence and recycled the ball.
It was immediately spread wide, with Gareth Williams brought down just short of the line in search of his hat trick
He off loaded Mark Pomeroy, who was brought out of retirement for this match. Pomeroy scored in the corner.
Mariners last try was the result of more sustained rucking and mauling in the renegades 22, where Andrew Barnes picked off the back of a ruck, darted down a very small blind side, dived and dotted the ball right in the corner of the goal area for his first ever Mariners try.
