Marc Bean to stand for PLP in Warwick South Central

Former Senator Mr. Bean will stand in the by-election in constituency 26 against the Bermuda Democratic Alliance’s candidate Sylvan Richards Jr.

The United Bermuda Party has yet to name a candidate.

Premier Paula Cox announced Mr. Bean’s candidacy today at a press conference at the PLP’s headquarters, Alaska Hall.

She said: “An unknown author wrote the difference between the impossible and the possible lies in the person’s determination.

“What we’re here today to do is to celebrate and salute a young man who is young, confident and qualified. I would like to present to you our candidate Marc Bean.”

She continued: “It would be all to easy to list all his achievements and accomplishments and I won’t do all of that. He’s qualified commercial pilot, a former Senator and Junior Minister of Transport. That’s just some of who he is.

“As I indicated on Saturday night at the banquet, Mr. Bean is a man who is passionate about his country.

“He is committed, he has conviction and he considers the community issues. He loves his country and his party.”

Mr. Bean said: “It’s a distinct privilege and honour to be the candidate in constituency 26. I look forward to representing the people, every single voter.

“What I have noticed is a tremendous amount of love on the doorstep. I also recognize that the constituency is very family oriented. Many of the problems that they face are also the problems that other constituencies face.

‘The good thing is that the solution and the power for solutions lie within each doorstep. I will be seeking to connect with every voter.”

The candidate said with the new leadership, Premier Cox has “set a new tone” for the island.

“Now is not the time for promise and platudits. Now is the time for hard work”, he added.

Asked if Dr. Brown would overshadow the seat, Mr. Bean said no.

“I don’t think it’s and asset or a problem. Dr. Brown was a leader and an MP. He’s retired now and it’s my opportunity now to continue the work he did.”

Asked to elaborate on problems that lie in the constituency, Mr. Bean said: “Again, the issues are relative. I think that most people have concerns about the economy, crime and education.

“Again, it’s right across the board. The key is to be able to forge a relationship to connect with the average voter and make them feel part of the legislative process.

“The key is to be able to listen and be able to relate to each person. The solution has to be a collective effort.”

The by-election will take place on December 15.
