Three university students are spending a five-week internship at Government’s office in London.
Islanders Trent Lightbourne, 21, Mica Murray, 19, and Aliyyah Ahad, 19, will travel to the U.K. as part of Government’s summer employment programme.
Mr. Lightbourne is studying finance and economics at Andrews University, Michigan, Ms Murray is studying public relations at Mount Saint Vincent University, Halifax, and Ms Ahad is studying political science and sociology at the University of Toronto.
The trio have been learning the ropes at the London office since July 5.
Premier Dr. Ewart Brown said: “This exposure can only bring benefits to these young people.
“This Government will continue to work hard to provide every opportunity to make our young people citizens of the world.”
Colonel David Burch, Minister of Labour, added: “When the Premier asked if this was possible we had no difficulty in identifying the best and brightest in our programme and providing them with the opportunity to broaden their horizons in one of the world's leading cities.”
Ms Ahad and Ms Murray represented Bermuda at the Women In Diplomatic Service Annual General Meeting in London.
There, the students were provided a rare opportunity to witness the election of Joan Rwabyomere, Uganda High Commissioner, as Chairman.
In addition to gaining experience within the London office, such as assisting in Consulate Affairs, the students will get a tour of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, including meeting Colin Roberts, director of the overseas territories directorate.
They will also tour the Houses of Parliament and engage in a question and answer session with Bermuda’s All Party Parliamentary Group.
The youths will also embark upon a one-week work placement with Butterfield Private Bank in the U.K., where they can shadow directors in the fields of executive management, investment management, managing client relationships and risk and compliance.
At the end of the internship the students will present a researched presentation to the London Office team on Bermuda’s relationship with the U.K. based on their overall experiences.
