Letter: What's best: Being rude and open about race, or charming and in denial?
Which is worse - a rude black man who speaks openly about race and frequently makes some people angry or a charming black man who enables white people in their denial of responsibility for the racial division that existed in the past and continues today?
I'm not fond of Rolfe Commissiong's style, and I agree he is not exactly the ideal person to be Advisor to the Premier on Race, but to cast him as the most divisive voice on race along with Dr. Eva Hodgson is disingenuous on the part of Stuart Hayward.
As arrogant as Commissiong is and as annoying as Hodgson may be to some, I give them credit for addressing a topic with some intelligence that most avoid.
Hayward, on the other hand, is so fearful of losing face that he has arrived at a place where he plays the role of enabler of white denial. Stop being the caretaker and let them deal with it!
I give Hayward credit for all the courage he has mustered to address environmental and other controversial issues but when it comes to race he needs to muster some of that courage to speak the truth and earn the integrity he is so fond of being associated with.
