Letter: We need casinos to put the buzz back into tourism
We have long heard the debate about whether or not Bermuda and its resorts should be allowed to offer casinos.
Whilst we have tossed this around for well over 25 years, we have seen our competition 'JUST DO IT'. (Aruba, Bahamas, St.Kitts, St. Maarten, Curacao, Puerto Rico and many more).
We all know the current status of Bermuda tourism. We all know how few hotels are left.
When you have declining numbers, little entertainment, fewer hotels, you have a serious dilemma.
The 'buzz' evaporates and quite literally we are not on the radar of many. It is time for all of us to row our Bermuda tourism boat back to prosperity.
We must turn this around with urgency and it is critical that Bermuda offers new options for our visitors.
The time has come, Bermuda, for the country to embrace new ways of attracting visitors. We need to build new hotels - and some are coming.
But we need to make tourism profitable again.
We need to provide every option we can for the 21st century traveller. It is all about OPTIONS!
Casinos are a very important part of 21st century tourism.
They provide fun, entertainment, buzz, profits for hotels/operators and revenue for government and will make Bermuda competitive in the world tourism market once again.
I urge all Bermudians who want to see a rebirth and a renewed sense of energy in the tourism product to support Casinos for our country.
I think we can all see the time has come!
