Letter: If whites joined the PLP racial slurs would disappear

Dear Sir,

In Mr. Stuart's latest article, he accuses me of exploiting emotionalism when I refer to his father's inability to get work in Bermuda after he protested a display of blatant racialism at the Eagle's Nest (Currently, "The Top of the Town").

Come on Stuart, race is an emotional subject by definition.

However, the point of my reference to the banning of Stuart's father was merely to point out that Mr. Lancelot Hayward could be prevented from entertaining in Bermuda after the incident at Eagles Nest because the white minority race then and now completely dominated the ownership of the hotel industry and the political organization of Bermuda. Put very simply, Bermuda's white minority exercised that level of authority because they could do so.

This total dominance prevailed until November 9, 1998 when the PLP swept into power. Since 1998, victimization of black Bermudians using economic threats backed up by a supportive political structure is no longer possible.

An immediate consequence is that Black Bermudians are no longer afraid to voice their disapproval at the slightest evidence of prejudice by whites, real or imagined. Understandably, white Bermudians interpret this behaviour as increasing prejudice by blacks.

This seemingly negative behaviour by blacks can be eradicated very quickly by white Bermudians simply by joining the PLP in increasing numbers. Should this occur, we would very quickly create a Bermuda whereby racial slurs and other expressions of prejudice would disappear. I am certain that Stuart knows this, yet he makes no attempt to persuade white Bermudians to join the PLP.

Instead, he prefers to claim - falsely I might add - that the PLP is trying to coerce the white minority into joining their party. Is Stuart adopting this very negative pro-white stance in the hope that the UBP will select him to run in Pembroke West? Is this is even remotely the case, than Mr. Hall is perfectly justified in referring to him as "a political hooker".
