Letter - Don't overlook the role of the Bermuda Sea Cadets
It was with great pleasure that I started reading the article on Page 19 of the Friday Bermuda Sun as I thought that finally the press had recognized what and excellent celebration of Bermuda's seafarer roots had occurred; when with regret I noticed that the young ladies and gentlemen of the Bermuda Sea Cadets had not been recognized. As both of your photographs were of sea cadets, and sea cadets helped staff the Bermuda Sailing Association displays, I felt that it was my duty to bring this to your reader's attention.
The Bermuda Sea Cadet Association along with the three Sea Cadets units of TS Admiral Somers (St George), TS Bermuda (Admiralty House) and TS Venture (Dockyard) have been delivering maritime training to Bermuda's youth since 1968.
Saturday, 11 October saw cadets, officers, parents and volunteers from all three units on parade, where they provided a demonstration of standing and marching drill, assisted the Bermuda Sailing Association with their displays and gave demonstrations and experience in rowing two replica Bermuda harbour gigs (as shown in your photo). These four oared rowing gigs were handmade by Mr. Anson Nash and were lofted of designs of the workboats that would have plied Bermuda's harbours in the days of sail. Mr. Nash has donated his time to teach the old and young of Bermuda the ancient art of pulling (rowing) these fine craft.
Further to using this letter to raise the profile of Sea Cadets in Bermuda and praising those cadets that turned out for the dress and deportment I would also like to mention that the Bermuda Sea Cadets Association will be holding a Fish Fry at Christ Church, Devonshire on Friday 24 November to raise funds to continue training young Bermudians in the ways of the sea. Everyone is welcome.
