Letter: Could these blocks stem coastal erosion?

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 18: Dear Sir,

I do not know if anyone else has forwarded this information but if our Government is really concerned about coastline erosion attached is one solution to consider.

These devices are known as Dolos blocks. They are made of concrete poured in a mould in the shape of an “H” twisted 90 degrees. This system is in use around the world to protect shorelines and harbours. I personally have seen this and similar applications in the Caribbean and the Mediterranean.

While not ecstatically pleasing to look at, they do serve the purpose.

The design and placement of these blocks create a series of different angles which dissipates wave action thus reducing the force of the waves on the coastline.

Airport dump

There are other system designs but this one seems to be more effective. As we are currently producing large square blocks of concrete for the Airport dump, maybe these same materials can be used to create our own Dolos blocks.

Since the topic of shoreline erosion has come up concerning the Grand Atlantic project, I feel that this material would make good reading and maybe some food for thought. It seems that one of the ways to get the attention of the “powers that be” is through the printed media.
