Letter - Are you an Ogilvy? The BBC wants to hear from you
If any of your Bermudian readers have ancestors called Ogilvy, the BBC wants to hear from them.
The BBC's family history programme Who Do You Think You Are? is a popular TV series in the UK. In each episode, one of Britain's best-loved celebrities traces their family tree to reveal the surprising, extraordinary and often moving stories of their ancestors. Now, they're looking for Bermudians who might share an ancestor with one of our celebrity presenters.
In an episode being filmed later this summer, the production team have been investigating a man named John Ogilvy (1831-1899), a Surgeon-General with the British Army who had an exciting career serving around the world in far-flung warzones - and eventually in Bermuda. He was posted to Bermuda as the army's Principal Medical Officer there in 1881, and married a Bermudian woman named Emma Dalzell Gilbert. John and Emma had five children - two died young in Bermuda, but the other three, Hilda Sidonie, Eric, and Raymond, may have married and had children in Bermuda. There may well be second cousins of our British celebrity living in Bermuda today who have no idea about the other branches of their family, and the programme makers would love you to get in touch to swap stories.
If you believe that any of your grandparents' surnames were Ogilvy, please contact the Who Do You Think You Are? production team by email on [email protected], phone on 00 44 207 241 9322, or fax on 00 44 207 267 5292.
