Women in business / Going it alone
Launching my own company gave me creative freedom
Did I want stay in the nine to five grind? I loved my profession as a graphic designer but did not enjoy the restrictions that came with working for someone else.
Working full-time can be demanding for working mothers, often with little or no flexibility. It seemed I had lost my passion and the very things that had attracted me towards a career in design had been lost under a layer of apathy and daily grind.
I craved an alternative and found inspiration, so decided to take a risk. If I wanted change my lifestyle, I was the only one who could make it happen.
This is why I decided to start up ThINK-Creative Solutions, a little company with big ideas.
With the downward turn of the economy and people striving to budget, ThINK offers companies the chance to get a professional job done with one-on-one individual attention at cost-effective rates.
This is a great opportunity for me to share the benefits of my expertise and knowledge of advertising, the Internet and design. Through my independence I have created new partnerships.
By offering my services as an outsourced resource to other companies, I have helped my small business grow into something more self-sustaining.
ThINK has also let me explore alternative creative avenues, which is what drove me to break away from the security of a stable job in the first place.
Running my own business offers me the freedom and independence to decide where I want to take my career.
In the future, I want to explore textile and product design working alongside my close friend Dana Cooper, a talented designer and illustrator who has already had some success in this field.
My work complements hers and collectively we believe we can come up with some inspiring creations.
Getting ThINK off the ground has been exciting and daunting, especially since I am responsible for three children.
But the road ahead looks positive and I have experienced a boost of creative energy from deciding to go it alone, which has undoubtedly enhanced my work.
I have also gained the flexibility I craved, found happiness and revitalized my graphic design career, which has truly been the best reward.
