Lack of godly values and economic disparity contribute to island's current catastrophe

Bermuda of late is becoming a nation that is continuingly extending condolences to families who have lost their loved ones to death either through road accidents or murder. Why is it that every time we turn around, we hear condolences being given.

Condolences are only given in times of catastrophes. Our catastrophes have not been by acts of nature, or things we cannot control, but by acts of foolishness, stemming from desperation and frustration which have been left to crystallize into cold hearted, angry and mean spirits. There is a saying "that hurt people hurt". We as a community must get to the heart of the problem, the problem which is disturbing the souls of our people. A disturbed soul is dangerous and undoubtedly a threat to peace and harmony.

Could the problem lie in our country's economics, its educational system or its lack of religious beliefs.

Economics is the social science that studies the production, distribution, and consumption of goods and services. If the above is to be understood correctly, Bermuda can we say that we have a fair and just system of economics? Is our economy fair in its production and distribution of goods and services to all of its people? We must ponder this.

According to a study by Samuelson and Nordhaus, it has been concluded that economics is applied throughout society, in business, finance and government, and the flip side is that it plays its part also in crime, education, the family, health, law, politics, religion, social institutions, war and science.

The following is quoted from Wikipedia, "A definition that captures much of modern economics is that of Lionel Robbins in a 1932 essay: "the science which studies human behaviour as a relationship between ends and scarce means which have alternative uses."

Scarcity means that available resources are insufficient to satisfy all wants and needs.

Hence, we will all agree, that just and fair economics is an important and impacting aspect of society. Bermuda let us begin to bridge this gap of our economic disparity and opportunity that runs deep into our society.

Education is another issue and we all know in Bermuda the educational system has not been right for a very long time; the effects of this have now come home to haunt us.

The system has created disparity of hope amongst its people.

We get those who have been lost between the cracks and we get those who have done everything as they should and they still cannot find the jobs they were promised, or if one is 'lucky' enough to secure a job of choosing, they have to fight and claw and prove themselves over and over to get what is rightfully theirs and which is so freely given to 'others'. The educational system has indeed created a monster.

And then we come to good old religion! When a nation is taught godly values it reflects it in the behaviour of its people. Taught ... being the operative word. Who is doing the teaching ... parents where are you and what are you teaching your children, after all, you are their first and most significant teachers. Let us be accountable. When religion goes out the door, we all go to hell.

We have people who think they are not bound by the principles of God, which command order, justice, equality and respect for life and limb.

Your only Lord is God; the One who created the heavens and the earth in six days, then assumed all authority. He controls all matters. There is no intercessor, except in accordance with His will. Such is God your Lord. You shall worship Him. Would you not take heed? Quran: [10:3]

Bermuda we must turn to our God and implore His help and mercy to change the things in our system that is causing us harm and hurt. O you who believe, you shall be steadfast, you shall persevere, you shall be united, you shall observe GOD, that you may succeed. Quran: [3:200]

On behalf of the Muslim community, our condolences go to the family of Mr. Kumi Hartford.
