Kyme and Stout lose in the second round

Any dreams Nick Kyme and James Stout may have had of picking up medals in the men’s singles were extinguished in Melbourne yesterday.

Meanwhile, swimmer Kiera Aitken qualified for the semi-finals in the 100 metres breaststroke with a time of 1:04.55. She was the 11th fastest of 16 qualifiers

Kyme, who comfortably defeated Kenyan Chikumbutso Mikutumula in straight sets in round one, crashed out to Scotland’s John White in three sets, while Stout was losing 2-0 to Welshman Alex Gough when he retired hurt. It was no disgrace for either player to lose to two of the best performers in the world game. They now go in to the plate competition and still have an outside chance of a medal in the doubles.

Swimmers Michael O’Connor and Ronald Cowendid not advance from the 50m backstroke and 400m freestyle respectively in their heats yesterday. But both are back in the pool today along with Kiera Aitken and Graham Smith as the swimming competition kicks into gear.

The gymnasts were also scheduled to begin their competition today. Coach Tina Williams said they were in high spirits and ready for the challenge.

“The team have completed the final official training session and are all now ready for the competition,

“England’s number one gymnast Elizabeth Tweddle, favoured to win overall, had to withdraw with an ankle injury after the podium training competition on Tuesday evening.

“Namibia have entered two gymnasts and Trinidad only one. It is a great achievement for Bermuda to enter a full team in this year’s Commonwealth Games.

“It has now been confirmed that Bermuda’s Kaisey Griffith is the youngest women’s artistic gymnast. Age eligibility requires the athlete to be 14 in the year of the competition to compete. Kaisey just makes it with a birthday of December 26th. All the girls are looking forward to the competition tomorrow night.”[[In-content Ad]]
