Jazari, 10, is following in his father's race boots
Why did you decide to start racing?
I saw my dad do it and I thought it might be kind of fun.
How was you first race?
It was great and fun. I was in the minibikes, but now I’m in the 80s.
What’s the biggest difference between the two classes?
In minibikes I didn’t have to change gears and the bikes are way slower. In the 80s you have to change gears and it goes faster.
How much of an adjustment was that for you?
It wasn’t that hard. It was like pushing down to change one gear and pushing up to change another.
What do your friends think about you getting to drive a bike at 10?
Some of my friends are really excited for me and psyched that I am riding.
What do you say to them to encourage them to race bikes?
I say to them ‘come watch me’ and that it’s really not that hard or difficult to ride a bike. I’d tell them to just come down and try it.
Who are your rivals?
My cousin and my team-mate and best friend Wytiko Showers. Wytiko and I became friends through racing. When I started racing I didn’t know what I was doing and Wytiko helped me.
Where have you raced overseas and how did you like that?
I raced in England and that was very exciting because they had older riders who were experienced. Plus the bike was really different than mine. I also went to California and had fun out there too.
How did that compare to Bermuda?
The track was very different. Our track is a lot smaller. You could fit our track in the middle of their track. I was really psyched to be there because there were a lot of turns.
Mom Tina is happy to see her son involved in a healthy sporting activity in which the whole family can participate.
How do you feel about Jazari racing?
I’m fine with it because he seems to be enjoying himself. He is progressing very well and he shows he can handle it.
How do you feel that participating in this sport is helping him as a person by competing overseas?
It’s very good in that he’s able to get experience and exposure of competing overseas. Not only was he able to race at the track, but he was also able to talk to other children his age on how they can do it. The other side of it is that people overseas can see what talent Bermuda has.
