Being in a wheelchair, however, hasn't made it easy. My school life has had its good days and bad days, but overall it has been a positive experience.
I have been able to make many friends over my school years. The students have been very kind to me.
However, there was one time, during my first year of middle school that I was teased about being in a wheelchair. Overall, though, the students have been quite nice to me. Sometimes the students would get curious and ask me about how I was born, but that does not bother me, I just answer their questions.
For the most part I am able to pass my classes with ease. However, I have a bit of difficulty grasping math concepts. So my math teacher makes certain modifications to help me to grasp the concepts. I try my best to learn the formulas. Of all the classes that I have taken, my favourite is English.
Among the challenges we have had in the education system were getting a para educator when I moved to high school; getting some of my class work modified for me and getting me into the schools of my choice.
Before Berkeley Institute I attended East End Primary School and the Clearwater Middle School. I really enjoyed being taught at both schools. As of September, I will be entering my fourth and last year at the Berkeley. I like Berkeley and the students there are helpful.
Overall, my school life has been a positive one and I've enjoyed it and I'm looking forward to college and university.
Next week: The silly assumptions that people make about the physically challenged.
