Interested in competing in the Olympics?
Reuben Bean and Garon Wilkinson became the first fighters to represent Bermuda in sanshou, a full contact martial art, when they fought at the Arnold Classic in Ohio earlier this year.
Now the pair want to introduce other martial arts fighters on the island to the sport — which will be featured in the China Olympics.
Their recently formed group, The Bermuda Sanshou Association, is holding a recruitment day on Sunday between 9am and 4pm at the Bermuda Police Gym.
There will be workshops on fitness, strength, boxing, kicking, pushing and takedowns.
“These are just some of the physical elements needed to be a successful sanshou fighter and workshops in these areas will be conducted by some of the island's most respected coaches,” said Wilkinson.
Runner Garry “Buster” Wilkinson who has represented Bermuda in the Commonwealth Games has put together a fitness programme for the day.
He will be working along with international fitness pros personal trainer Devrae Noel-Simmons.
Allan “Forty” Rego will be conducting the boxing portion of the training day. The BSA team has been consistently working with Rego at his gym and his expertise has helped transform Bean's traditional point fighting technique into a style more conducive to the full contact ring.
Bean said: “The knowledge that Mr. Rego possesses is phenomenal. We are honoured to have him conduct a seminar for our athletes.”
Wilkinson's Northern Shaolin Kung Fu Instructor for more than 20 years, sifu David Simons will conduct a seminar on shaolin kicking techniques as well as tai chi.
“The meaning of “sanshou” is Chinese free style and this will give the fighters a good feel of the traditional aspect of the sport,” added Bean.
Jujitsu expert kyoshi (Professor) Arnold Allan will be lecturing on what is argued to be the most valuable of the sanshou techniques — takedowns.
“He is very well known for his combative style of training and his seminar is bound to separate the “men from the boys” and indeed make this a successful
Olympic Recruitment,” said Wilkinson.
The fee for the day of training is $25 and enquiries can be made to Garon
Wilkinson at 747-8495 or Reuben Bean at 799-7541. The BSA can also be e-mailed at [email protected].
Athletic shoes and shorts are recommended for the fitness and strength portion of the day's workout. Comfortable training or martial arts attire is required for the remaining sessions. It is also recommended that participants bring their mouthpiece and groin cup. There will be a lunch break so it is advised to bring something light that will not affect the arduous day of training.[[In-content Ad]]
