In Memoriam: Richard E. Meyer

Richard E. Meyer, age 77, of Bay Shore, NY, passed away on September 13, 2010. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Joanne C. Meyer (nee Sohan).

Richard was the devoted father of Stephen, Christopher and Andrew, loving brother to Carol Basile (Jack), Thomas Meyer (Penny), Dolores Dall' Aste (Gino) and Harold Meyer, and devoted uncle to nine nieces and nephews and 17 grand nieces and nephews.

He was a graduate of Regis High School and St. John's University.

After service as a Lieutenant in the US Marine Corps, he joined Johnson & Higgins, a well-respected insurance brokerage firm, where he had a successful career, rising to the position of Executive Vice President and was a Member of the Chairman's Office.

He continued his business career after retirement from J&H, investing in and serving on the Boards of a number of different startup businesses.

Richard was the Chairman of Latin American Reinsurance, a Bermuda Corp, and of Global Excess Partners.

He was active in a number of charitable and religious endeavors, including Chairman of Boys Hope Girls Hope at both a regional and national level and was one the first recipients of the organization's Vision of Hope Award; Chairman of the Calvary Foundation; Chairman of both the Risk Management and Audit Committees for the Diocese of Rockville Center; and held leadership positions at The Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation, and the Children's Storefront.

He was instrumental in establishing the School of Risk Management at Saint John's University, which awarded him an Honorary Doctorate for his efforts on behalf of the University.

Richard was widely known for his kindness, compassion, philanthropic generosity and desire to help people. He never asked for anything in return. His extraordinary generosity with his time, his thoughtfulness, wisdom and business acumen will be greatly missed by his family, friends and business associates.

We who knew you in Bermuda respected you, thank you and will never forget you.
