What's on TV / News coverage
If you're a news junkie, then the choice is all yours
How to find the right news service for you
These days, you can choose from a variety of news channels and programmes originating from around the world, with each option offering its own take on the people, places and events that shape our lives.
The British Broadcasting Corporation, more commonly known as the BBC, was founded in 1922 and is the largest broadcasting corporation in the world. BBC World is the BBC's 24-hour news and information channel broadcast around the world from London, England.
BBC World provides news, business and sports coverage and draws on the expertise of more than 250 correspondents around the globe. Comprehensive bulletins on the hour every hour bring viewers up-to-date with news developments as they happen. The channel's hourly news programmes are well-recognized for being impartial and unbiased, providing in-depth analysis of breaking news and global events. The World Business Report and Middle East Business Report cover the most important financial, economic and company stories, while Sport Today rounds up results and news from a wide variety of different sports. BBC World airs on CableVision channel 8.
Launched in 1980, CNN pioneered and has dominated the 24-hour, all-news television format. CNN broadcasts primarily from its headquarters in Atlanta, and from studios in New York City and Washington, DC. Perhaps one of the most recognized news outlets in the world, CNN offers viewers a variety of daily news programmes. Wolf Blitzer's programme The Situation Room assembles top CNN correspondents, analysts, contributors and guests for complete, up-to-the minute coverage of daily events. The programme is modelled on the concept of the White House Situation Room, and combines traditional reporting methods with the newest innovative online resources.
Larry King Live premiered in 1985 and is CNN's longest running programme. Using a mix of interviews and topical discussions, and inviting live telephone calls from viewers around the globe, the programme features guests from the business, entertainment and political worlds.
Unexpected
Anderson Cooper 360 is another of CNN's most talked about programmes, largely because of Cooper's commitment to bring focus and attention to a wide array of world events and issues, including unexpected and underreported stories. In Bermuda, CNN airs on CableVision channel 20, while CNN International airs on CableVision channel 17.
Fox News is an American cable and satellite news channel that airs in Bermuda on CableVision channel 103. It's popular with U.S. viewers, with more than 11 per cent of Americans naming Fox News as their most trusted news source - the highest percentage received by any one news source in the U.S. The network was launched in October 1996 and slowly rose to prominence in the late 1990s as a serious competitor to CNN.
Fox News places a heavy emphasis on the visual presentation of the news. Graphics are colourful and attention grabbing, allowing viewers to get the main points of what is being said through the use of on-screen text summarizing the position of the interviewer or speaker. Fox News also uses "Fox News Alerts" to interrupt regular programming when a breaking news story occurs, and to remind viewers of scheduled events. One of the most popular and talked-about programmes on Fox News is The O'Reilly Factor. Now in its tenth year on the air, the programme explores the issues and topics in the headlines and blends news analysis with investigative reporting.
Another option for world news coverage in Bermuda is Canada's CBC Television, home of the award-winning nightly news programme The National. The programme is anchored by Peter Mansbridge and offers viewers a comprehensive hour of nightly news and current affairs.
The National covers the major Canadian and international headlines while also exploring "big picture" issues and stories of interest through documentaries, feature reports, interviews and in-depth examinations of news items covered by CBC's top journalists. CBC TV airs in Bermuda on CableVision channel 138.
