I'd like to get to 1,000 runs

I never really thought about 1,000 runs at Cup Match until last year. I’m now 100 runs away and to get to 1,000 would join an elite list of players like Charlie Marshall, Janeiro Tucker, Clay and Wendell Smith.
To be where I am at 900 runs when I’ve batted at number six or seven throughout most of my career shows how consistent I’ve been.
I’ve been really thinking about and I want to join the 1,000 run club and become a part of Cup Match history, but the most important thing is for me to do what’s best for the team.
Getting 1,000 runs isn’t the goal, keeping and winning the Cup for St. George’s is. That doesn’t mean I don’t want to get to that mark, but it has to come second.
Part of it is, once you get up past 500 and 600 runs, you start passing the great players of the game like ‘Bummy’ Symonds, Noel Gibbons, Arnold Manders and Clevie Wade. Those guys were the veterans when I was a young player and I eventually had to replace them.
I saw those guys as role models and goal posts for me to reach.
As I reached them I realized I was among the greats of the game. Then it was crossing some of the other greats like Rupert Scotland and Lionel Thomas.
Last week Jacobi was saying how they are going to exploit Oronde’s weaknesses as captain. Well, Jacobi should know all about that considering how St. George’s have exposed his weaknesses as captain over the past two years.
Jacobi has been exposed by the senior players of St. George’s in every area so he is probably pretty happy to see Oronde rather than me this year.
But that’s a false hope because Oronde has Clay Smith there to help him and I’ll also be there to give any advice if he needs it.
He might be green, but a captain is only as good as the team around him. Oronde has a good team backing him. This will be a good challenge for him and it’s time for a new era in St. George’s.
Jacobi can have his say, but that’s all a part of Cup Match. However, at the end of the day, the result will be determined on the field.
Oronde’s task will be a bit more difficult with no Charlie Marshall nor Glen Blakeney.
Those guys are entertainers and exciting batsmen. St. George’s has lost some great batsmen over the past few years with them and Clay.
These guys are icons of the game, but St. George’s has rebuilt things with some youngsters. n
