Letter to the Editor
HRC's response was wholly inadequate
I was absolutely horrified and disgusted when I read on the front page of the December 7 daily, Human Rights Commission Member Kamal Worrell's attempt to defend the 'racist dog' remarks made last week by Premier Dr. Ewart Brown to Opposition member Dr. Grant Gibbons during the motion to adjourn debate in Parliament.
How in the world can anyone defend and justify such ugly and venomous remarks based upon 'the context in which they were used' is beyond me and I'm sure the majority of my fellow Bermudians.
For heaven's sake, every nasty and demeaning word(s) ever spoken were always used 'in the context' of one thing or another. It still doesn't make it right. Have we lost all common sense and common decency as a people?
I'm sure I am not alone in my feelings of despair for our Island when we witness a person responsible for the HRC's Education sub-committee stand up and condone the verbal tirade from the Premier as apposed to condemning those remarks.
Just what kind of Human Rights Education are we achieving when we don't take a stand against such nasty words?
Mr. Worrell ought to stick to his day job, for in my opinion he is not fit to be a representative on the HRC.
His defence of those hateful and hurtful words is embarrassing to the HRC and he should do the right and honourable thing and resign his post.
Bermuda deserves better.
