Horton hopes for a hat-trick in Southampton West
WEDNESDAY, MAY 9: Former football and cricket star Randy Horton is aiming to score a hat-trick in Southampton West.
Mr Horton, a one-time pro footballer in the US and Somerset Cup Match captain, has been announced as the PLP candidate in the seat, which he has held since 2003.
Mr Horton said: “I entered politics because I am a champion of fairness, justice and equality for all in our communities.”
The MP, first elected in Hamilton Parish West in 1998, added: “It has been a classic experience to be part of the movement that brought about the change that saw the PLP gain power in 1998 and guide Bermuda since then.”
The former Government Minister said he would support renewable energy, with Tudor Hill in his constituency singled out as an ideal site and a community centre for Somerset Bridge Club and the community.
In addition, he backed the Morgan’s Point development and pledged to ensure there is “adequate open space” for use by local people and said he work to make sure it does not become a gated community.
Mr Horton, who played for the New York Cosmos, the Washington Diplomats and the Hartford Bicentennials in the North American Soccer League, said his party should be re-elected to help lead the country out of recession.
He added the PLP is also committed to job creation, as well as educational reform and higher achievement levels in schools.At the 2007 General Election, Mr Horton held the seat with more than 63 per cent over the vote against UBP challenger Charlie Swan, who took 36.7 per cent of votes cast.
