SATURDAY, AUGUST 4: A crash and a mechanical problem hurt any chances of a top performance by Flora Duffy in the women’s Olympic triathlon in Hyde Park this morning.
She finished 45th overall, but was off to a promising start.
Duffy came out of the water from the swim in 28th place and he a very quick transition which saw her move up to 23rd.
But on the first lap of the bike it started to go wrong for her and she ended up at the back of the pack after a crash. Top triathletes Emma Moffatt (AUS), Kathy Tremblay and Pamella Oliveira (BRA) also came off the bike with the tight corners of the Olympic course.
Duffy went on to complete the race in 2:08.54, but both Moffatt and Tremblay were don in by their crash.
Duffy said on Facebook: "One crash and one mechanical and my Olympic dream ended in heartache. Thanks for all the support."
Nicola Spirig of Switzerland won the race in 1:59:48 in a photo finish over Lisa Norden of Sweden.
