Governor condemns firebombing of MP's car
MONDAY, SEPT. 17: Governor George Fergusson today threw his weight behind a chorus of condemnation after an MP’s car was firebombed in a dawn attack at his house.
And National Security Minister Wayne Perinchief also added his voice to anger over the attack on an MP at his own home.
Mr Fergusson said: “I am shocked that an attack like this should be made, especially on someone involved directly in the service of his community and the whole of Bermuda, as an MP and as Chair of the Parole Board.”
Mr Fergussson added: “I know that the police are making every effort to find the perpetrator and I ask that anyone who knows anything about this incident should pass it on to the police.”
Mr Fergusson was speaking after Pembroke South East PLP MP Ashfield DeVent was targeted around 6am this morning.
His car – which was parked outside his Pembroke home – was firebombed, causing extensive damage, although no one was injured.
Rolfe Commissiong, who will replace Mr DeVent as candidate in the seat, joined Premier Paula Cox and the central PLP in condemning the action – which Mr DeVent feared could have been “politically-motivated.”
Mr Perinchief – a distinguished former senior police officer - said the attack was “an appalling attempt at intimidation that will be investigated and strongly prosecuted.”
Mr Perinchief added: “I met with Mr. DeVent this morning and he has shared with me his account of this appalling event.
“He is a true public servant and is undeterred from doing his duty. In fact, he has already given a statement to the police and his example of assisting the police is something we emphasize regularly.”
Mr Perinchief is due to meet with the Governor and the police senior command this afternoon.
He added: “I have already received a preliminary briefing from the Commissioner and he has assured me that this matter will be investigated with a view to bringing those responsible to justice.”
