WEDNESDAY, FEB. 1: A former High Commissioner of New Zealand will take over as Governor of Bermuda, it was announced yesterday.
George Fergusson, who has been a civil servant since 1978, will succeed Sir Richard Gozney as the Queen’s man in Bermuda in May.
Mr Fergusson said yesterday: “I am delighted to be appointed as Governor. I am an admirer of Bermuda’s great combination of sophisticated business and well-preserved history.
“And I look forward to working with the people of Bermuda and their representatives to play my part in maintaining Bermuda’s high reputation as one of the best places to live, visit and do business.”
Sir Richard, 61, is retiring from the Diplomatic Service.
Mr Fergusson, 56, joined the Northern Ireland Office in 1978 and a decade later joined the Foreign Office as First Secretary (political) at the British Embassy in Dublin in the neighbouring Republic of Ireland.
He has also worked in the Soviet Department, which became the Eastern Department of the Foreign Office after the collapse of Communist Russia, in London between 1991-93 before being appointed to a role in the British Embassy in Seoul, South Korea.
Mr Fergusson was appointed deputy head of the South African Department in 1996 and later that year was appointed head of the Republic of Ireland Department.
He spent four years as Consul-General in Boston before being seconded in 2003 to the UK Cabinet Office as head of the foreign policy team.
Mr Fergusson took up his last post as High Commissioner of New Zealand and Samoa and Governor of the Pitcairn Islands in 2006.
He returned to London in May, 2010 and was based at the Foreign Office before being appointed to his new role in Bermuda.
He is married to Margaret, a career officer with the British Council, and has three daughters. A son died some years ago.
Mr Ferguson’s father, Baron Ballantrae, was the last British-born Governor-General of New Zealand and served in that role between 1962-67.
